This private guided tour of La Cité de Carcassonne takes visitors through one of France’s most complete medieval fortifications, with a path that winds along the double-walled ramparts and through narrow, cobbled streets. The itinerary begins at the Porte Narbonnaise, the main gate that once guarded the city against invaders. From here, the guide leads the group along the ramparts, pointing out the strategic positioning of the towers and battlements that date back to Roman and medieval times. The tour continues inside the fortified town to the Basilica of Saint-Nazaire, where visitors can admire the intricate stained glass windows and the blend of Romanesque and Gothic architecture. Throughout the walk, the guide recounts episodes from the Cathar period and the Albigensian Crusade, revealing how the fortress became a focal point in these conflicts. Key stops include the Château Comtal, the castle within the cité, where visitors can see the medieval keep and its defensive galleries, and the narrow Rue Cros-Mayrevieille lined with medieval houses and artisan shops. At the Basilica of Saint-Nazaire, the guide highlights the carved capitals and the crypt’s ancient relics. Along the ramparts, the views stretch over the surrounding Languedoc countryside and the modern town of Carcassonne below. The guide also stops at the barbican and the postern gates, explaining their military functions and the daily life of the citadel’s inhabitants. This private tour is conducted on foot and typically accommodates small groups to maintain an intimate atmosphere and allow for personalized commentary and questions. The guide adapts the narrative to the group's interests, whether focusing on architecture, military history, or religious aspects. There is no motorized transport within the cité itself due to its pedestrian-only streets, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The tour duration varies with group preferences but generally lasts around two to three hours. The tour suits those with an interest in medieval history, architecture, and detailed storytelling. It appeals to travelers who appreciate learning through direct engagement with a local expert and who enjoy walking in historic environments. Families with older children who can manage cobbled streets and stairs will find this tour engaging, while those with mobility issues should consider accessibility details before booking.

Excellent tour with Paul - the tour was very interesting and informative and the vintage photos he showed us of the Nazis in Carcassonne and the resistance fighters brought the war years to life.

Carcassonne During World War 2

Had fun exploring the city and found some nice places what I wouldn't encounter otherwise. The statue at the first stop was missing though, however the riddle wasn't hard to solve. :)
